Real Housewife’s Real Regret About College

Last night on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, housewife Kyle Richard’s daughter Farrah graduated from college. Kyle gleamed at her daughter’s success and boasted that the day was one of the proudest moments of her life. Though excited for her daughter, who plans to become a forensic psychologist, Kyle expressed regret for not having earned a degree herself. Growing up a child star and having a child at the age of 18, Kyle chose to forgo college in order to raise her family.

While being a mother is an important and full-time job, it doesn’t have to be a limitation to going to school and earning a degree. Between online learning, accelerated completion programs and night and weekend courses, moms can earn a degree around their schedule. In addition, with Obama’s initiative to educate America by 2020, there are several scholarship options that make going back to school easier than ever for moms.

Recent legislation has introduced the mom grants and scholarships to help single, married and working moms pay for school. Federal Pell Grants have been increased for low income students from $5100 instead of $4050. These grants do not have to be repaid and they can be applied to both campus-based and online degree programs.

Tax benefits are also available for in-school moms. The American Opportunity Tax Credit program pays for the first $4000 of your higher education.

Private companies and organizations also offer mom-specific scholarships. Women’s organizations, parenting groups and associations are good places to start your search. Websites such as fastwebs.com also offer comprehensive information of scholarships based on interests, status and abilities.

A Lesson in Business from the Kardashians

Kardashians teach business a thing or twoFrom beauty products and clothing lines to books and workout DVDs, the Kardashians have capitalized on the nation’s economy with their fame and business savvy. The girls along with mother/manager Kris Jenner have redefined what it means to be female celebrities and successful business women. Though often the BUTT of comedians’ and television hosts’ jokes, Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian can actually teach business majors and even business schools a thing or two about success.

1. Capitalize on Your Mistakes – We first heard about the Kardashian sisters when sister Kim’s home-made film with ex-boyfriend and singer Ray-J was leaked to the public. Instead of cowering behind her indiscretions, Kim capitalized on them. Kim made appearances on talk shows, late night television and radio stations. Ultimately, the negative press ended up being the catalyst for the Kardashian’s fame.

2. Always Invest in New Ventures – The Kardashian sisters have products in nearly every sector of the market. Their empire includes heath, fitness and beauty products; books and DVDs; clothing; televisions series and brand endorsements. The girls have been achieved such great success because they are willing to try their hands at a variety of businesses.

3. Know Your Market – Kim, Khloe and Kourtney know exactly who their audience and target their products and endorsements exactly to their demographics’ likes, interests and attitudes. With a demo of women approximately 16 to 25, the sisters focus on creating products around women’s favorite things fashion, beauty and entertainment.

The business lessons that can be learned from the Kardashians are vast and varied. Business schools may want to consider enhancing their curriculum with material dedicated to dissecting the Kardashian business model. It would certainly be an entertaining way to engage students.

1. Money can’t buy you class, but it can earn you a degree that will make you smarter and actually worth something.

2. You won’t be tardy for the party if you had good time management skills! Time management is one of the first and core competencies taught in college.

3. With a good degree in cosmetology, you won’t have to rely on wigs and extensions to look good.

5. Earning a degree in nursing or health care will teach you that it takes nine months for a baby to develop, not seven.

6. Getting your degree in math will teach you the value of a dollar….and that it’s probably not wise to overspend on clothes, furniture and parties when you’re $11 million dollars in debt.

7. If you want to make a tape of yourself and your escapades, at least enroll in some film school courses to get tips on cinematography and lighting.

8. A communications degree will teach you how to properly express your feelings and thoughts…rather than flipping tables to make a point.

9. Next time you get a divorce, get sued, or go bankrupt- an education in the legal field could prove useful.

10. Get an education in English, maybe that way we’ll understand your delusional ranting!
